Hanni, an Australian-Vietnamese member, has been subject to political reaction in Vietnam since February 2023. Although Hanni was born in Australia's Melbourne, her parents and grandparents are Vietnamese. A supposed family photo of Hanni was shared on Meta in February by K Crush Động, one of the largest K-pop communities in Vietnam. The organization then claimed that Hanni's family still favored South Vietnam by pointing to vintage South Vietnamese government symbols inside their homes and places of business in the images.
From 1955 until the conclusion of the Vietnam War in 1975, the state supported by the United States was known as South Vietnam or the Republic of Vietnam. A significant reaction against the idol member has occurred due to the perceived devotion to or involvement with South Vietnam, which has since led to the Vietnamese Communist Party taking power in the nation. Some claim that the Vietnamese Communist Party suppresses NewJeans-related information for this very reason.
Of course, not everyone despises Hanni and NewJeans, but others claim that social pressure is making it less acceptable to exclude the group from public spaces. It is risky to openly promote NewJeans publicly, said an insider in Vietnam. There are supporters who support them despite continuing political disputes. But neither the government nor the media engaged in any formal censorship.
"NewJeans and Hanni are well known in Vietnam, but it is true that there are many people who are opposed to the group," he stated. Additionally, it is improbable that the government of Vietnam will let NewJeans to perform there.
